Question 1, the abortion rights question on this fall's ballot, does not actually include the word “abortion,” a fact opponents have seized on to say the measure is flawed. Backers accuse desperate opponents of "just making stuff up.

The initiative is extremely progressive for a deep-red state that has such a long anti-abortion history. The state only had three abortion clinics in 2017, and the last clinic closed shortly after Roe fell. Missouri currently has a near-total abortion ban with an exception to save the life of a pregnant person.

It is on the ballot to mobilize the Democratic base in a presidential and U.S. Senate election year. Given Maryland voters’ acceptance of a liberal abortion law by a 62% majority in 1991, the result of the referendum is thought to be a foregone conclusion.

Ten states will vote on constitutional amendments regarding abortion rights this election, including battleground states Arizona and Nevada. NBC News' Liz Kreutz reports more on how the issue is motivating voters in Arizona.

While the presidential race may be getting the spotlight this election season, key regulations, laws and policies are on the ballot in several states. Forty-one states have a combined 147 ballot measures in the 2024 election.
