At least 17 confirmed tornadoes touched down in Central Florida and the Tampa Bay region in the hours before Hurricane Milton made landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast, according to the National Weather Service.

Hurricane Milton's damage extended beyond the storm surge and powerful winds. The system also spurred strong tornadoes.

As Southwest Florida rode out the storm, one thing that seemed unusual with Hurricane Milton was the number of tornadoes. The storm made landfall near Siesta Key but Southwest Florida still felt the impact in the form of storm surge, winds, and tornadoes.

In St. Lucie County on the state’s Atlantic coast, far from where the hurricane made landfall, one sheriff confirmed some loss of life without providing further details after a tornado struck.
