A historic winter storm in south Alabama on Tuesday brought well over 6 inches of snow to the region and many counties to advise against civilians driving on the roads. Due to the weather conditions many schools throughout the state closed or were delayed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Some schools in North Alabama have announced delays for certain days this week due to cold temperatures. The later start time will allow students to be transported during slightly warmer temperatures and enable buildings to be checked for potential heat and plumbing issues before students arrive.

In anticipation of severe winter weather and snow coming to Alabama, including the Gulf Coast, several school systems have announced changes to their schedule for this week. The National Weather Service said a “significant” winter storm is becoming more likely for south Alabama on Tuesday.

Due to the freezing weather on Wednesday Jan. 22, schools surrounding the West Alabama area will experience two-hour delays, or closures.
