A depression over the Bay of Bengal, as reported by the India Meteorological Department, is expected to hit the Chennai coast on October 17. The low-pressure system intensified and is predicted to cross the north Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh coasts,

A low pressure area has formed over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining area. Weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country in 24 hours from 9:00am on Monday, said a bulletin Meteorological Department.

Over the next 48 hours, it is likely to become a well-marked low-pressure area and move west-northwestwards towards North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coasts, which puts Chennai city and adjoining districts on track for rainfall.

Widespread rainfall expected in Tamil Nadu as northeast monsoon approaches, with heavy rain forecasted and red alerts issued.
