The CDC regularly inspects ships for sanitation, grading them on a 100-point scale, with 86 or higher being considered a satisfactory score. Of the all the ships inspected in 2023 and 2024, 13 scored below 90 points — and three of those were Carnival ones: the Breeze (86 points), Elation (89) and Miracle (88), according to the current CDC report.

While the majority of cruise lines work hard to keep their facilities ultra-clean and shiny, one bad experience can be enough to go viral in the types of “cruise story horror story” videos popular in some corners of the internet and thereby can do serious damage to a ship company’s reputation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new data on the most and least sanitary cruise ships of 2024. Ten cruise ships received scores of 89 or lower; a score of 85 or below is considered “not satisfactory.
