President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping execution order on the death penalty that directs the attorney general to “take all necessary and lawful action” to ensure that states have enough lethal injection drugs to carry out executions.

Trump falsely claimed that restoring the federal death penalty was necessary in order to deter violent crimes.

Though Trump is unable to put the commuted inmates back on death row, he did ask the attorney general in the order to “take all lawful and appropriate action to ensure that these offenders are imprisoned in conditions consistent with the monstrosity of their crimes and the threats they pose.”
