Markets regulator Sebi on Tuesday said the position limit for Trading Members (TMs) across client and proprietary trades in index futures and options will now be higher of Rs 7,500 crore or 15 per cent of total open interest (OI) in the market.

Capital market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has raised the position limits for trading members in index Futures & Options contracts to 15% of the total open interest (OI) in the market or above Rs 7,

The circular dated October 15 also said that the mechanism for monitoring the position limits will be changed. This will come into effect from April 1, 2025.

SEBI has raised trading member position limits for index futures and options to ₹7,500 crore or 15% of market open interest, up from ₹500 crore. This update applies to proprietary and client trades, with changes effective from April 2025.

The position limits will be applicable for index futures and index options separately as it is the current practice, Sebi said

According to the Sebi circular, monitoring of the equity derivatives segment, including index and stocks, will be based on the total open interest of the market at the end of the previous day's trade.
