You might want to keep your eyes on the skies through next month: Six planets will align in January and February.

While the planets are technically always "aligned" along the same plane in our sky, seeing so many at once is a special opportunity

For much of January and February, you have the chance to see six planets in our solar system after dark, although two — Uranus and Neptune — will be hard to see without a telescope or high-powered binoculars.

Six planets will be in alignment during the planet parade: Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Venus, and Saturn.

The best planetary alignment of the year is underway, with Saturn, Venus, Neptune, Uranus, Jupiter and Mars stretching across the night sky. Winter can be the most challenging time of the year for stargazing since it is frequently cloudy or bitterly cold across North America.

Because planets always appear in a line, the alignment isn't anything out of the norm. What's less common is seeing so many bright planets at once.

A celestial event being hyped by some internet sites as an extremely rare planetary alignment has been oversold, astronomers are saying, but it should be a cool show if the sky is clear Saturday evening.

Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are visible to the naked eye this month and for part of February. Uranus and Neptune can be spotted with binoculars and telescopes.
