Lyle and Erik Menéndez were sentenced to life without parole in 1996 for the murders of their parents, but were resentenced to life with the possibility of parole following the recent spotlight on their case.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic reduced the brothers’ sentences from life without parole to 50 years to life. They’re now eligible for parole under California’s youthful offender law because they committed the crime under the age of 26. The state parole board must still decide whether to release them from prison.
Lyle and Erik, who are now 57 and 54, now qualify for parole — leaving their freedom in the hands of the state parole board and Gov. Gavin Newsom.
