It might only be described as a facelift, but the hybrid system of the freshly updated Audi A3 has undergone a major upgrade. The battery capacity has grown from 13 kWh (usable) to 19.7 kWh, and with it the maximum EV range has increased to a hugely impressive 88 miles – that’s double what its predecessor could manage.

The plug-in hybrid A3 joins the petrol-powered lineup and packs some significant upgrades over its predecessor, including a bigger battery and more power. It will go on sale in the UK this November with prices starting from £39,150, helpfully sneaking under the £40,000 luxury car tax threshold.

Audi has announced that the plug-in hybrid version of its recently refreshed A3 hatchback will have an impressive pure-electric range of 88 miles – more than twice that of the previous model.

Having renewed its A3 hatchback lineup earlier this year, Audi has now introduced a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) which achieves 88 miles of clean, green driving courtesy of a 25.7kW battery. EV anoraks will note that automatically sends it close to the top of the hybrid range list too.
