President Joe Biden announced possibly his final round of student loan debt relief Monday, bringing the total student loan forgiveness extended over the past four years to more than $183 billion for five million federal student loan borrowers.

In a last-minute action on Monday, the Education Department canceled loans for 150,000 borrowers through programs that existed before Biden took office. His administration expanded those programs and used them to their fullest extent, pressing on with cancellation even after the Supreme Court rejected Biden’s plan for a new forgiveness policy.

With Monday’s authorization and 27 previous ones, the Biden administration has forgiven over $180 billion in student loans, even as its larger policy vision never took root.
