The owner of American Coney Island in Detroit says the recent closure of Lafayette Coney Island due to rat infestation impacts their business.

DETROIT – It’s been almost two weeks since Detroit’s well-known Lafayette Coney Island closed for a rat infestation. It’s their second shutdown since 2022. Now, the owners are seeing increased pressure from the community. Malik Shabazz, a community activist, is calling for the restaurant to be permanently closed.

Lafayette Coney Island will have a white placard placed in its window when it reopens following a shutdown due to a rat problem. The placards come as part of Detroit's Dining with Confidence program, which went into effect on Oct. 1.

The Detroit Health Department said that Lafayette Coney Island in Downtown Detroit has closed once again to address a rat problem.

Detroit residents are demanding that a coney island restaurant "clean it up or stay shut down" following the restaurant's latest alleged health issue.
