The Philippine Senate president says the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte will begin after Congress reopens in June and will be done fairly to avoid a repeat of a 2001 impeachment proceeding that stalled and sparked massive protests that forced a president to step down.

The Philippines' parliament has voted to impeach Vice-President Sara Duterte following complaints about alleged corruption. Duterte, the daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, has been accused of misusing millions of dollars in public funds and threatening to have Marcos assassinated.

The impeachment complaint, the latest of at least four the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte has faced, was transmitted to the Senate for trial.
